7 Myths About The PMP® Certification Exposed (Part 1)

For anyone working in the field of project management, the PMP® certification is usually considered as a gold standard of the industry. Reputable as it may seem, the PMP® certification comes along with a lot of misunderstandings. This article exposes the 7 most notorious myths about the PMP® certification.

#1 MYTH: YOU CAN LEARN THE PMP® CERTIFICATION IN 1 MONTH

Often times, a project manager with 3-5 years of experience need to focus entirely on the PMP® exam for 3-6 months. This preparation period can be shortened with a competent Coach and a great deal of effort. However, not every experienced practitioner can do well in the PMP® exam without proper study in a certain amount of time. In the end, the PMP® exam is like a game in which you must learn the rules to win. Usually, 3-6 months is enough for you to get familiarized with the content and format of the PMP® exam.

#2 MYTH: YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST 61% IN YOUR RESULTS TO PASS THE PMP® EXAM

Since 2016, PMI® has changed the pass/fail policies. Due to the “psychometric analysis”, harder questions are worth more than easier questions. This means if you answer difficult questions correctly, you will get a higher score than with easier questions. Someone who gets all the easy questions correct, but cannot answer difficult questions may not pass the exam. However, you should make use of the 61% passing score as your lowest score possible, then add 15-20% more in case of the fluctuation in difficulties. Well, if you can get 75-80% in the mock tests, you are almost assured to pass the real PMP® exam.

#3 MYTH: PMP® CERTIFICATION WILL GUARANTEE HIGHER INCOME

That PMP® certification holds an international recognition doesn’t ensure that it will make you a more successful practitioner. The PMP® certification, like any other certification, helps you to be regarded as a certified practitioner by other project managers in the industry. The process of studying for the PMP® exam is for you to be equipped with the required knowledge to progress in the field of project management. Therefore, there is no guarantee towards the success of your projects or a remarkable growth in your income as it takes a lot of effort, skills and years of experience.
