PDUs are divided into two categories: Education and Giving Back to the Profession, the number of PDUs to be completed for each three-year cycle is dependent upon the type of certification held. In this article, earning PDUs in Education Category will be carefully discussed.

In earning PDU that belongs to Education Category, one may attend PMI® sponsored seminars, conferences, chapter meetings, community of practice meetings. These events can easily be found on PMI® Chapter websites and credential holders can sign up to attend most of them. It is also common knowledge that for each hour of instruction you receive in the areas of project management, program management, project scheduling, or project risk management you can claim one PDU.

Earning PDUs under this Education Category also covers other educational experiences such as training, webinars, other professional meetings, and any other training provided organization. Also, for each hour of instruction in the areas of project management, program management, project scheduling, or project risk one hour of professional development can be claimed and awarded as a PDU.

Credential holders can also apply a self-directed learning method in earning PDUs in Education Category. These activities can involve reading credential related articles, books, or instructional materials; utilizing interactive CDs; watching credential related videos or listening to Podcasts; participating in formal credential related discussions with others such as coworkers, consultants, or clients; or being mentored by a colleague, coworker, or consultant in a credential related topic.

One point worth noticing is that the maximum amount of PDUs in Education Category one can earn is 60 out of 60 PDUs. This means only by earning 60 PDUs in said category, renewing your PMI certificate is no longer an obstacle.
