How difficult is the PMP® exam?

PMP® aspirants, especially first-time test-takers, should be well-prepared on the level of difficulty of the exam. This article discusses some key points in how challenging the PMP® exam is.

The exam consists of 200 multiple questions in 4 hours. The questions are designed at a high level of difficulty to test your understanding and ability to solve problems regarding project management. 


Length of the preparation materials. Materials for preparation are usually so lengthy that you may need a lot of time to cover them all. Moreover, you may not need to learn everything by heart for the exam. However, you should familiarize yourself with all topics in each domain. 

Complex exam structure. Among 200 hundred questions of the exam, there are some that you can use logic to figure them out while others require you to refer to the PMI® standard. The difficult task is that you need to decide when to use what strategy.

Challenging questions. Questions in the exam are tricky and you may get discouraged by making many mistakes if you are not familiar with the type of questions. They are wordy on purpose to make you feel puzzled. So, you should learn how to understand what the question is really about.
