How Do I Renew My Certification?

Whether you’ve just earned your certification or have been a certification holder for years, the steps to renew your certification are unchanged.

First, you need to earn the required amount of Professional Development Units (PDUs) to fulfil the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) for your certification. For Project Management Professional certification, you’ll need to earn 60 PDUs through a period of 3 years. These 60 PDUs can be further broken down as follows: 35 minimum Education PDUs and 25 maximum Giving Back PDUs.

TALENT TRIANGLE PDUS

The earned PDUs must be categorized into the 3 skill areas of the PMI Talent Triangle® - Technical, Leadership and Strategic and Business Management.

Skill Area	Definition
Technical	Knowledge, skills and behaviours related to specific domains of project, program and portfolio management. The technical aspects of performing your job/ role.
Leadership	Knowledge, skills and behaviours involved in the ability to guide, motivate and/or direct others to achieve a goal.
Strategic & Business Management	Knowledge of and expertise in the industry/organization, helping you align your team in a way that enhances performance and better delivers business outcomes.

There is no limit on the number of Education PDUs that you can earn which means that you can accumulate up to 60 PDUs in Education if you like.

Secondly, enter your PDUs in the online CCR system: https://ccrs.pmi.org/

The third step is to pay the renewal fee. If you are a PMP member, you just need to pay the discounted fee of 60 USD. While as a non-PMI member, you need to pay 150 USD.

Lastly, once you’ve renewed your certification, take a break before you start planning for your next 2-year renewal cycle.

There are few things to keep in mind. Once you’ve submitted payment, even if you submit it before your certification expires, your new cycle end date will be three years from your current certification expiration date. For example, if your certification renewal date is 1 July 2019 and you renew it on 1 march 2019, the expiration date will be 1 July 2022 (three years from the original renewal date).
