How To Become A Certified Project Management Professional (Part 3): Maintaining Your Certification

1. Get at least 35 Professional Development Units (PDUs) through education.

Once a certified PMP®, you must renew your certification regularly by taking part in PMI®’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. You are required to earn 60 PDUs once every 3 years. 1 PDU is associated with 1 hour of project management training.

At least 35 of these are obliged to center around continuing education. This requirement can be further elaborated into 3 aspect:
-  A minimum of 8 PDUs focus on technical project management skills
-  A minimum of 8 PDUs pay attention to leadership skills
-  A minimum of 8 PDUs canter on strategic and business management
-  The additional 11 PDUs can be related to any of the three aforementioned categories.

2. Obtain a maximum of 25 PDUs by giving back to the profession.

This involves anything that allows you to use and share your skills and knowledge to progress and dedicate yourself to the profession. You can earn a maximum of 25 PDUs from giving back, but there is no minimum. So, this is just an optional way to earn PDUs. If you like, you could earn all your PDUs through continuing education. For your information, working as a professional only counts a maximum of 8 PDUs.

3. Report PDUs to renew certification.

After you have completed your 60 PDUs, make sure you record these hours through your personal dashboard on the PMI® website. This is where you monitor your existing PDUs and claim new ones. There is no cost for membership maintenance, only the costs required to accomplish your PDUs. The PDUs are self-reported. You don’t need to provide further proof of your participation other than the provider who offers the training and the dates you attend the course.
