Seven Basic Tools Of Quality (Part 1)

There are several types of tools that can be used in managing the project’s quality. However, it is commonly known that among these are seven tools for quality control that are mostly used. This article will go further into 7 mentioned basic tools for quality control.

Pareto Chart

A Pareto chart is a bar graph of different data showing the number of frequencies from the largest to the smallest or vice versa. The chart itself contains both bars and a line graph, with the purpose to highlight the most important one among a large set of factors. In quality control, it describes the most common sources of defects, the highest occurring type of defect, or the most frequent reasons for customer complaints, and so on.

Control Charts

Control charts, or run charts in other words, are often used to plan data points over time and give a full picture of data movement. These charts demonstrate when data is consistent or when there is any fluctuation. It focuses on monitoring performance over time and it distinguishes between common cause and special cause of variations.

Histograms

Histograms are bar chart pictures of data that show patterns that fall within typical process conditions. Any changes in a process should trigger a new data collection. One more point is that a minimum of 50-75 data points should be selected to ensure an adequate number of data points. The patterns that are discovered plays an important part in showing an analysis that helps us understand the change of the project itself.

Scatter Diagrams

Scatter diagrams are graphs that show the relationship between variables. It suggests various kinds of correlations between variables with a certain confidence interval. If the pattern of dots slopes from lower left to upper right, it indicates a positive correlation between the variables being studied. If the pattern of dots slopes from upper left to lower right, it indicates a negative correlation.
