Seven Basic Tools Of Quality (Part 2)

To be continued with the 4 fore-mentioned basic tools of quality in the previous blog, this article gives you a further knowledge about the last 3 tools: Flowchart, Check Sheet and Fishbone Diagram.

Flowchart

Besides reporting relationships in organizational structures, flowcharts are also used to examine the work process or workflows. It shows the steps as boxes of various types, plus their order by connecting the boxes with arrows. This diagrammatic description also illustrates a solution model for a given problem. Flow-charting the steps of a process provides a picture of what the process looks like and can shed light on issues within the process. Flowcharts are also used to show changes in a process when improvements are made or to show a new workflow process. This example provides a picture so those checking children in will know the steps each takes depending on whether it is their first time or a child who has been there before.

Check Sheet

A check sheet is a form used to collect data in real-time at the location where the data is generated. The data it captures can be quantitative or qualitative. A check sheet is used to trace the number of times a specific incident happens. Kaoru Ishikawa once identified five uses for check sheets in quality control, which are: checking the shape of the probability distribution of a process; quantifying defects by type; quantifying defects by location; quantifying defects by cause and keeping track of the completion of steps.

Fishbone Diagram

A cause and effect diagram, also known as a fish-bone diagram shows possible causes of a problem. To use this tool, one first identifies the problem need solving and write it in the head of the fish to the right. Next is listing the major causes of the problem on the spine of the fish. Causes are typically divided into sections of people, means, materials, and tools. Causes are then classified via brainstorming between a group that is familiar with the problem. Once all potential problems are recognized, they can use the diagram to develop an improvement plan to help solve the problem.
