What Is An Accredited Project Management Experience According To PMI®?

The first step to become a PMP® is to satisfy PMP® credential requirements. And one of the major requirements is to have a sufficient amount of your project management experience. The question is that what kind of experience is concerned as accredited. In the application form, you need to give details on your previous experience and this article will elaborate clearly how you can identify if your experience is counted.

1. You must earn enough hours of leading projects stipulated by PMI regarding your educational background.
- For secondary degree holders (e.g. high school diploma): You need a minimum of 5 years of project management experience with at least 7,500 hours leading and directing projects.
- For four-year degree holders (e.g. bachelor’s degree): You need to have a minimum of 3 years of project management experience and at least 4,500 hours leading and directing projects.

2. You don’t need to be entitled as “project manager”. However, you must be assigned with the responsibility of managing projects, which means the experience is about project management (as defined in the PMBOK®), not just performing projects managed by others.

3. You must have experience in all 5 stages of a project’s lifecycle: initiating, planning, directing, monitoring & controlling and closing the project. Nevertheless, these experiences of the 5 process groups are not required to be in the scope of one project. In other words, you can be involved in the 5 process groups in various projects: initiating and planning in Project A, directing in project B and the other 3 stages in project C.
